I remembered when i was in secondary school i struggle with Physics , everyone around me wonders why i don’t understand a simple concept in physics. i couldn’t because they were all talking about imaginary force and lines 😒its ambiguous. I decided to love my Physics textbook ,i read it everyday,😔 but still comes out an average student. Back then i don’t understand that for a concept to be stored in your long time memory it has to make sense to you.

A wise man once said ” if we teach the kids of nowadays how we were taught, then we are robbing them of their future.” The first time i attended a Robotics class, i felt happy and fulfilled, gravitational pull, forces, friction, speed, capacitors, resistors etc all make sense to me. We are in the 21st century, as educators we need to integrate 21st century skills into our classroom.

Skills like

  • Critical thinking.
  • Creativity.
  • Collaboration.
  • Communication.
  • Information literacy.
  • Media literacy.
  • Technology literacy. etc

Technology literacy is the ability to effectively use technology to access, evaluate, integrate, create and communicate information to enhance the learning process through problem-solving and critical thinking.(wikipedia)

WHY USE TECHNOLOGY IN CLASS

  1. Prepares learners for the future

Education is not just about memorizing facts and passing exams (la cram, la pour). Rather, it is about solving complex problems relevant to a particular situation and working well with others. Incorporating technology in the classroom, prepares learners for the future and equips them with the necessary tools to stay on par with an expanding digital economy.

2. Converts abstract ideas to Concrete ideas

its allows kids understands concepts faster and better because they could visual or connect with the information passes. Imagine experiencing revolution and rotation of the earth using VR or understanding speed using Lego mindstorm, a student can connect abstract to concrete.

3.Improved Retention Rate

Student believes that technology makes them retain information faster and better. For examples presenting a lectures in Powerpoint presentation would caters for audio-visual learner, adding games in the PPT will also engage the kinestetic learners(who doesn’t like game?😍),hereby catering for the all types of learners in you classroom.

TOOL TO INCORPORATE TECHNOLOGY IN CLASSROOM

  1. COMPUTERS🖥💻
  2. SMARTBOARDS
  3. TABLETS📱
  4. PROJECTORS/TV
  5. ROBOTS🤖
  6. VIRTUAL/AUGMENTED REALITY VR/AR
  7. ETC

HOW TO INCORPORATES TECHNOLOGY IN CLASSROOM

  1. USE VIDEOS AS MINI LESSONS:- you can bolster your lesson plan by using videos as overviews for some topics. Visit Youtube, TeacherTube for some educational videos.
  2. USE LIVE VIDEOS :- You can contact a teacher from another school or an expert in a field to talk to student about a particular topic. Visit Skype in classroom.
  3. USE OF MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION :- You can create Powerpoint presentation using multimedia and also create simple games and Animations.
  4. USE A VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP :- If a location is far and beyond your budget for visiting, you can run a Virtual Field trip using GOOGLE CARDBOARD or VR HEADSETS.You could create your own content or view others.

5. USE OF ANIMATION SOFT WARES :- You can create an animation to explain a concept or simulated a scenario to make your students understand better. e.g Animaker or Scratch etc

With every positive there is always a side effect, use of technology can be distracting if not properly used and if teachers don’t know how to use them efficiently.

Cost, Management and Social needs could all be limiting factors to use of technology in classroom. With the invention of smartphones most of the above methods are all achievable.

Technology has become a fantastic and useful tool in the classroom. Teachers are expected to make use of it to enhance the learning experience and information dissemination.

We keep on clamoring for the government to include it in our curriculum but i believe the change has to start with us. Lets start incorporating those tools into our classroom and showing the world what we can do.
